This World Women’s Day we decided to bring together a team of strong women on a new campaign called Game Changer.

We talked to football players, Munira and Pia, about the state of female football and the ‘Game Changers’ they would like to see in the next year; and enlisted talented illustrator Alice Piaggio to create a T-shirt for the campaign.

All proceeds from sales of the T-shirt go towards “The Scoring Girls”, a project that offers girls and young women – regardless of their background, socio-economic status or faith – the chance to work together to identify their strengths and build up enough self-confidence to realise their dreams in life.

Munira

Munira is a young FC Union Berlin player with Turkish and Palestinian roots. She loves football and always played it with the boys at school. Ever since her parents brought her to her first football club, she has been committed to making football her full time job. But, as a female player, juggling studies and training without any financial assistance is a constant challenge. Luckily she has a teacher that believes in her as a player and helps her with exams.

Her ‘Game Changer’ would be for women to have more opportunities to focus on football without needing to work or study on the side.

She is also hoping that the World Cup in 2023 will bring more attention to women’s football because “our passion and effort in football is the same as men’s – so why should we not enjoy the same benefits?”

Only when this happens would we be able to say that football is really unifying people.

Pia

Pia is a designer who lives in Berlin and plays for Moabiter FSV.

She is passionate about playing team sports which is why she wants to do all she can to help her team get promoted to the next league.

A potential ‘Game Changer’ in her opinion would be if women’s soccer were shown more on TV, in the hope this would help to reduce the gap between men and women’s salaries.

Luckily, in the last year, women’s football has become more popular, so she is optimistic that the World Cup this summer will stoke the passion and hype around women’s football. At last.

The T-shirt, designed by Alice Piaggio,  was sold on Everpress: a waste free and more planet conscious way to sell fashion – only purchased items were printed and shipped.
